i first recognized art as wildness, and it seemed right to me

i was born in port huron
i grew up in detour village
giwideonaning is the anishinaabemowin name for this area meaning point which we go around in a canoe

my father is a pilot on the great lakes he guides the foreign ships through american waterways he is also a musician
i was given the name amanda lynn after the mandolin
a calling to be instrumental

i think it is how i was raised in nature that connects me strongly to the anishinaabe something deep draws me to the first people

where i am from in the upper peninsula of michigan
the bridge was never welcomed
it was thought by building it the wilderness would be lost art is my way across
the mackinac bridge and water line

i am an artist inspired by the natural world…living in the modern one
am i active enough in this culture…
“Art is a trickster mission and the stuff we need to do it doesn’t always correspond to what makes it good or real.” Nathan Schneider

artists like animals find ways to survive constantly adapting to their environments the natural world is acting
they adapt because they have to
they must change to survive

i feel a kindred spirit in the coywolf
coy not telling or revealing all the information that could be revealed
coyote is challenging…a shapeshifter and most of all a survivor
coyote is an enigmatic character who appears again and again in many tribes stories he is invariably involved in making things happen whether mischief or magic
coyote stories leave a lot unexplained that is part of his mystery
the stories are used to explain things that are other wise unaccountable

i am calling to the ancients for help how to lead the culture forward i seek symbols and wisdom from ancestral past
to change the course of the future

consciously trying to get ideas across to affect global understanding if we aren’t saving these things are they going to disappear…
when human beings have so much impact on their environment
all i want to do is impart sensitivity

i am carving out my own wildlife corridor to carry me back home
a return to the fresh watersea
my paintings are a moving story

i am working to save the source
my own port huron statement to avoid the unimaginable michigan huron the blue lake in me
